FORT AUGUSTUS stands on the Southern shore of Loch Ness. The village developed around a fort built in 1720 by General Wade to subdue the Highlanders. It was named after the King’s son, William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland who became known as ‘The Butcher’ after his victory at the battle of Culloden. The Lovat family used the building in the mid-18th century as a hunting lodge, and in 1876 leased it for a peppercorn rent of 1 pound per year, to a group of English and Scottish Benedictine monks who had returned from Germany (although the rent was never actually collected). The monks founded a monastery and later ran a boarding school there until 1993. Subsequently they set up a heritage centre, restaurant and accommodation block, but suddenly in November 1998, the monks left and the Abbey closed. It has reverted to the Lovat Estate and its future is not yet clear.
The village of Fort Augustus is situated at the heart of the Great Glen in the Highlands and is an ideal centre for all kinds of holiday pursuits such as golf, walking, climbing, etc., or as a base for exploring the magical mountains and hills by road..
